I left early Friday to get ahead of the holiday traffic. As of May 26th, the colonial south campground is on a reservation system that must be booked 3 days in advance. I found a spot in the north campground instead, which is still first come first served.
My hike went to to the Fourth of July campsite. There was only one group ahead of me and they said the trail to the pass was still heavy snow so I relaxed at the campsite instead. There's plenty of shade, but not so much that it takes away from the views. The hike up is a lot of switchbacks but there's 4-5 good sorces of water and the entire way up is under tree cover. I used bug spray and didn't encounter any bugs at all. Surprisingly I didn't pass anyone on the way down. Total trip was about 10 miles.
