The unpaved portion of the Mountain Loop is in good condition, but once you turn onto the FS road up to the trail head, be aware of some large potholes. Some of which are nearly as wide as the road. Thankfully you aren't on this road very long before you hit the trailhead, but just FYI to take it slow (my 20 yr old Corolla survived it).
I've hiked Goat Lake 3 times and every time I take the Upper Elliot option, both to the lake and returning. I enjoy it's gradual ascent, wide trail (in most spots) and, on days like today, the views available when there are breaks in the trees. One day I'll take the Lower Elliot option...maybe. This time on the upper trail, I spotted a grey colored owl swooping in the vicinity of the trail and black and red garter snake sunning itself.
As for the lake itself. I didn't actually see it this time! the brush around the lake has become very thick, and the trail that goes to the lakeshore really needs to be trimmed back and maintained. Instead, I opted to have my quick lunch at one of the empty campsites instead before heading back down. All in all an enjoyable hike!
