All in all, this was an amazing trail. Besides the beginning (and end) riverside walking portion being slightly monotonous, there were endless views and lots of solitude. I decided very ambitiously to hike this in one day, which I generally wouldn't recommend, but I would definitely revisit this as at least an overnight hike.
I hiked clockwise and added a little detour to Red Pass on the PCT for a nice view of Glacier Peak, which I think was worth it. That is one shy volcano though, on the 30 mile trail I think I had about 3 or 4 good views of the mountain.
The bugs were pretty bad, but there was no snow and only a few downed trees on Pilot Ridge. Wildflowers were great and water was plentiful on the whole trail, though both look like they will be ending soon as the hot days continue.

How bad is the drive to the trail head from Darrington and especially on road 49? I have a scion XD and it's not super low clearance but definitely not high.

I was in a RAV4 and it was manageable, but still a little hairy. Mostly the road is fine, just your typical Forest Service access road, but there were two or three spots that were washed away or just super chewed up. I think you may be okay, but proceed with caution.
