Be sure to put this wonderful lowland trail on your winter hiking itinerary! Even though Highway 107 is never out of earshot (and seldom out of sight), the Chehalis River Surge Plain is an extraordinary environment. Even this time of year the area is teeming with birds and I even saw three beaver in the slough. With most of the leaves off of the trees, you can see much further out across the surge plane. The thick carpet of reds, yellows and browns softens your footfall and allows you to hear the many bird songs. As the trail is a section of an old railroad grade, it is flat and wide and very suitable for children.
