Snow Lakes — Saturday, Jan. 12, 2019

Central Cascades > Leavenworth Area
From the first bridge over Icicle Creek

Got to the trailhead at 1:00 in the afternoon. The parking lot is not plowed so we parked on the side of the street with the other half-dozen cars also there in the afternoon. The bathroom at the trailhead is closed currently so plan accordingly. The trail is covered in packed snow and was easy to follow. We saw other hikers with only boots, with microspikes, and with snowshoes. All were suitable for the trail but snowshoes were helpful after the first mile when the trail started getting steep, slippery, and less packed. Hiking poles were also nice to have but not strictly necessary. After the second mile, the visibility got worse due to fog and we turned around shortly after that.

I would highly recommend bringing sunglasses or snow goggles, even on an overcast day. My friend thinks she got partial snow blindness because her eyes would water and burn the next day at work; she didn't wear any eye protection!

There were several people there simply to take photos. The bridge over Icicle Creek is only a few hundred feet from the trailhead so definitely worth a quick trip out if you're in the area.
