I was coaxed out to hike this trail due to earlier reports that the falls were frozen and the bootpack was good. I was looking to get a mid-length hike in the snow with some elevation gain, and this delivered. I hiked to the falls with poles but without my spikes, there were only a few spots that seemed slippery and they were within the first mile. I did use my spikes on the way down, and there were a few times when my feel slid around a bit- which might have been reduced bye slowing down my descent. The falls were, indeed, still frozen. Or mostly frozen, with some pieces of ice crumbling and falling down the slope. I was not tempted to go any higher up the trail, but there were several day hikers that did journey on, both with and without snowshoes. Provided the snow doesn't freeze over into an icy sheet, this is a great winter hike if you've got some traction devices.
