Licorice Fern Trail — Sunday, Jun. 16, 2019

Issaquah Alps > Cougar Mountain

If you are a novice hiker like me, this trail is quite a workout! It’s rated as “moderate” on AllTrails, and I agree with that rating. We hiked the 3.9 mile out and back trail, with a destination of the Far Country Waterfall.

Trail is in good condition, but the terrain is rocky/loose/dry with lots of tree roots. You definitely want shoes with good traction and maybe ankle support if that’s a concern for you. A couple of spots made me wish I had poles for a little extra stability, but completely doable without.

My husband and I had the trail pretty much to ourselves. There’s no parking lot, just roadside parking near the trail head. We arrived around 12:15pm with two or three other cars there. Five to six cars when we came back about 2:30pm. Definitely encountered more people on the way out than on the way in, but not crowded at all.

Be extra cautious if you’re taking your kiddos, there’s several steep drop offs on some narrower parts of the trail, mostly along the first mile.

Sadly the Far Country Waterfall is all dried up at this point. Same goes for all the creek crossings. Would be worth trying out this trail in April/early May to see the water. Despite that, lots of beautiful foliage, and, as the name suggests, lots and lots of ferns!
