Sheep Lake — Saturday, Jul. 20, 2019

Mount Rainier Area > Chinook Pass - Hwy 410

This is an absolutely gorgeous hike on a well maintained trail with amazing views almost the whole way to the lake! Not sure why WTA lists it as a 3.8 mile hike, we clocked in at 5.2 round trip starting from the PCT parking lot, so heads up it’s a bit longer than listed!

Definitely wear sunscreen/hat, the first part of the hike is in direct sun with no real tree cover until the last half mile or so to the lake. The trail is narrow in some places with steep drop offs down toward the road as you start to climb, so be extra careful with little ones and furry friends. Friendly reminder to please keep your doggos on leash, and remember your trail etiquette!

The lake is beautiful, and very cold. Kudos to the two dudes we saw swimming in it, definitely too cold for me! Plenty of spots to hang out/have a snack. Mosquitos were everywhere (including the parking lot!) and I thought I’d escaped bite free because I wore long sleeves, but they bit me right through my clothes.

Definitely hit this trail early if you can. Very popular with lots of other trails that link up. We arrived just after 9am and the lot was about half full. By the time we made it back just before 1pm, our lot and every lot you can see from the mountainside was completely full with people parking on the roadside.

Would absolutely do this hike again. Go check it out!
