Started from the trailhead at 0700, finding my way by flashlight for the first half hour. The first 3 or so miles of the trail is still quite brushy with a couple of large downed trees, but by no means impassable. After crossing Ziegler Creek (which was dry) at about 3.5 miles the trail starts switchbacking steeply. I took a break at the Mulkey shelter for snacks and to filter water. There is also an open-air pit toilet here. Around mile 5 the trails starts to descend until it meets up with the Pete's Creek trail, at which point you steeply ascend to Moonshine Flats around mile 6. The ground was frozen and a little icy here, but no snow just yet. The last 1.2 miles to the summit is a leg workout to be sure, but so rewarding on a clear day. Hit the summit at 1130 and spent close to an hour up top. I hadn't seen a soul all day until I started my descent and ran into 2 parties of two who had both come in from Pete's Creek. Got back to the car at 1600, making for a total of 9 hours on the trail.
