Trip Report

Vesper Peak — Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2019

North Cascades > Mountain Loop Highway
Lower Valley

Climbed Vesper Peak on Wednesday, and it was a perfect day - great weather, good conditions.

Note: the summit register is full, so if someone wants to give back, bring up a rite in the rain notebook!

The access road was fine, we did it in a car with low clearance, and there was only one section where I had to be careful.

The hike is pretty straightforward up to Headlee Pass and Vesper Lake, though there are a few long sections of talus where routefinding isn't obvious.

Above the lake, it's pretty continuous snow until the summit, with a few sections of rock and steep roots through krummholz.

We put microspikes on trailrunners and felt good about it, though it was a sunny warm day and we got good penetration in the snow. In colder, shadier conditions we might have wanted ice axes. On our way down, the switchbacks below Headlee Pass also got extremely icy as the afternoon cooled things down.

Get after it before we get too much more precip!
