I made it up to the top of Mount Forgotten and given that there haven't been any reports to the summit so far this year due to high snowpack, I figured it would be a good first ever trip report!
TL;DR - I eventually made it to the top. It was beautiful but I wouldn't recommend this for the next couple of weeks until more of the snow melts.
As others have mentioned, the water crossings are still running high on the way up so you'll probably get your feet wet over the next couple of weeks. Hit solid snow cover at around 4900ft just before the meadows which is probably still a couple of feet deep if not more in spots. I also can't remember the last time I saw that much pollen on top of the snow.
I reached the edge of the meadows and decided to attempt the traverse. At this point there was enough snow cover and/or debris for the rest of the traverse that I only picked up the trail maybe once or twice to the summit. I tried following my GPS route as best I could but ultimately ended up dropping down a bit too low at times and then started just aiming for the path of least resistance. The slushy then icy snowpack made for a pretty steep slope the entire way so it was very slow going with spikes and poles. An axe would be helpful if you do try to attempt it and I wish I had mine after a couple of slides. Lost my sunglasses during one of them so if anyone sees a blue pair let me know!
I was ready to call it quits about an hour and a half in after another little slide, but I somehow managed to get the trail and a brief patch of dirt just before hitting the SE side of the mountain. So I kept going, making good progress back onto the snowy meadow under the gully. Heading up the snow filled gully was slow going again with a lot of kicking snow to create some foot holds, but didn't feel sketchy or anything compared to the traverse. Two hours after I had started the traverse, I then popped up at the summit. The stunning views almost made the struggle and somewhat unwise decision to do the traverse disappear from my mind.
Knowing how slow going the return trip was going to be, I didn't spend too much time at the summit before making my way back. I did try to stay higher on the way back which helped a little bit, but I still had some slips on the steep snow fields. Got back to the meadows in a little over an hour and a half with an uneventful return trip back to the trailhead.
We've been lucky the past few years with early access to the higher terrain due to warm springs/early summers, but not this year. While the views at the top were beautiful, the traverse isn't worth it right now in this condition with the steep snowfields and it wasn't the wisest decision on my part to do the traverse. In the next few weeks though, it'll be awesome with fantastic views! There were only a few spots where the bugs were bad but im sure it'll be worse as more snow melts so be sure to have bug spray and a headnet.
