Three of us old-timers camped overnight at Lower Lena Lake and then did a day hike the next day to Upper Lena Lake. The trail to Lower Lena is well-maintained and is an easy hike for almost anyone. The hike to the Upper Lake is more physically challenging because of the elevation gain and the condition of the trail.
The trail is steep, rocky, overgrown, and covered in water, mud, and snow in places. There were several downed trees to climb under or over but all were passable. There is also a creek crossing that is shallow but very cold. Upper Lena Lake is still frozen over. We encountered very few bugs. I'd recommend hiking poles for the trail to help steady yourself on the way down from Upper Lena Lake.
