Trip Report

White Chuck Bench — Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2022

North Cascades > Mountain Loop Highway

This is a pleasant forest ramble on a soft dirt path with few rocks/roots and little elevation change. It was very quiet except for almost constant river noise far below.

Don’t be fooled by the trail description that you come ‘river level.’  We were anticipating a pay-off of cool riverside time on this hot day, but that is not possible on this trail. After the wooden bridge that crosses the Black Oak Creek, where the trail is lowest and closest to the river, it was tantalizingly loud but not accessible.

Also, the trail does not ‘peter out in underbrush’. It turns &  heads uphill again. A horse party approaching confirmed our suspicion: the trail continues for 3+ more miles to a camp on the river (possibly the “Crystal Creek -6” that is indicated on the wooden sign at trailhead?) Before that, there is no river access.
