Foothills Trail — Saturday, Aug. 27, 2022

Puget Sound and Islands > Seattle-Tacoma Area
2.6 mile barricade

We took our dogs on the Foothills trail from Wilkeson to Carbonado. Wanted to check it out as it is part of a future expansion plan. First half mile from fire station is paved. Then it is a dirt/gravel path with a slight gradient up through fairly dense trees. Only passed a total of 4 hikers, 2 dogs, and two motorcycles. However, the path is blocked at 2.6 miles from Wilkeson with concrete barriers and graffiti sprayed “private” on the center block. We walked back to town and for a bonus hiked past the historical coke furnaces, along Wilkeson creek and up toward Sunset Quarry. Wilkeson town has a few eateries worth a stop. All of that was surprisingly interesting-more so than the Foothills trail at that point. We’ll go further up 165 and try the Foothills trailhead above Carbonado next time. Check out You Tube on Visit Rainier Wilkeson website for 5 min interesting historical vignette.

Typical wide path, but not railroad width
Stop by for coffee or food.
