A ski tour! The gate opened at 9:30 or so, we headed uphill on the mountain at 10:20. By around 11:30 we made it to pan face. We saw the crown and debris of a small wind slab avalanche. The NWAC avalanche Forecast was considerable. We went climbers left along the summer route. We saw a smaller, undisturbed slope. After much discussion of risk and personal preference, we went back to pan face. Someone had put in a skin track and a boot pack. We followed the skin track to the top, spacing out from each other. Above the face, the knolls were windswept and icy. We put on our ski crampons to make it easy. After the knolls it was mostly windswept. We made it to about Pebble Creek or Mclure Rock.
We turned around due to the gate closing promptly at 4. The descent was faster than I expected given the wind crust! It was easy to avoid the icy bits while staying close to the trail. The riding was best below pan face.
The area is so beautiful and it was pleasantly busy with jovial skiers, snowshoers and splitboarders. Clouds came and went- hot in the sun, cold in the wind. Make sure to wear sunscreen!
The road was fine, nonetheless you are required to have chains.
Editing to add: with it being winter in the mountains still, the experience there will completely change day-to-day and tomorrow will be a whole new set of conditions and weather!
