Slate Creek Trail — Saturday, Jun. 24, 2023

Eastern Washington > Spokane Area/Coeur d'Alene
The marsh near Slate Creek

I had originally planned this as an overnighter, but plans changed so I shortened the route a bit. Still a great hike though - this was my first time hiking in the Panhandle and it did not disappoint!

The directions to the trailhead are right on, but I will say that once you get past Moon Pass, the roads get pretty rough. My two-wheel drive RAV4 did fine, but I got nervous and parked about 3 miles from the trailhead. I'd recommend 4WD after Moon Pass.

The hike itself is great. Followed the Upper Slate Creek trail, and was going to go through Elbow Gulch but saw a black bear on the trail, so opted to take the Dam Ridge trail onto the ridgeline, followed that to FR 1907, then onto Trail 165. Took this to the Foolhen Mountain trail, back to the road and out to my car. Gorgeous 360 degree views from the top of Dam Ridge and Mastodon Mountain!

The trails are great - lots of walking on dirt bike/four wheeler tracks but didn't see any people on the trail. Foolhen Mtn. was a little brushy coming down but still easy to follow.

Beautiful view atop Dam Ridge
