Started at the Lake Ethel TH and took the long way to Larch Lake by hiking past the 3 Scottish lakes on the way in. It was an epic route, I only wish I had the energy to go to cup lake after arriving.
I started at 7am and made it to Larch Lake at about 2pm. It was just me and I spent the afternoon sitting in the sun, reading and enjoying the larches. I also heard a couple of big rock falls that afternoon.
I took the McCue ridge trail on the way back to cut a little time and elevation off the trip. I think I could have made it back to the car in 5 hours but my feet were in bad shape and the last three miles I was going pretty slow.
This lake has been on my list for a few years. Next time I go I'd like to spend two nights there and explore Cup Lake and the peaks around the area.

Did you have any trouble 1.7 miles from the TH for lake Ethel? I was under the impression that it’s closed because it’s on private land. We are going there next week.

No I didn't have any trouble, I saw people working up there and no one said anything. The trail is a bit torn up because of their construction but my understanding is that hikers are still allowed.
