Olympic Peninsula > Olympia
Heron rookery

What a perfect morning to take off work and get outside! I wanted to do a warm up before going on my first hike with the Mountaineers tomorrow and this was a good, close to home option. Beware of break-ins at the trailhead! I noticed two spots where windows had recently been broken, which is unfortunately a pretty big problem at this spot.

I marked the trail as having minor obstacles because of a few mud patches when you get closer to the end of the loop trail nearer the bay. It sucks to walk through mud, but you could really see the impact of people walking around it and making the trail wider. Otherwise the trail was in good shape! I could have sworn that the loop trail used to have a bunch of boardwalks, but those are now gone (hence the mud).

One last note - there are a ton of herons at their rookery! I had never seen them there before, but there were so many! A bald eagle had disturbed them, so it was really neat to see them flying back to their nests!

Beautiful day!
