Trip Report

Blue Lake Creek — Friday, Jul. 15, 2005

South Cascades > Dark Divide
This was a FUN trail. Steep, with many sustained climbs of 45 degrees, wrapping around the mountainside with a sheer drip on the right. Several rock starcases assist in the ascent. This is the only trail in the Blue Lake system restricted to hikers only and it was great. As we followed the Blue Lake Creek up and up toward the lake, we saw cool rock formations and nice cascades. The trail was dry and well maintained with no noticable ruts or holes. There was only a small bit of water on the trail in one spot. The lake itself was large and cold. The people and dogs enjoyed a swim, although the couple that was fishing off the beach seemed a little annoyed. Motorbikers access the lake from their own trail, and a loud group of them showed up while we were there and all lit up their cigarettes. A little annoying, but no big deal. I normally choose a hike for the payoff at the end (lake, vista, etc.) But on this hike, the trail was the payoff. I highly recommend it.
