Trip Report

Lookout Mountain Lookout — Wednesday, Sep. 21, 2005

North Cascades > North Cascades Highway - Hwy 20
This report is written by the caretaker for the lookout…. This lookout is partially furnished and offers one of the best views in the cascades. As of September, The lookout is in good condition-the tower was restored by the USFS last year, so all is in good shape. Here is a list of available items in the lookout for the public…. Two twin beds 3 lightweight sleeping bags Several pans for cooking Silverware Lantern Tools Water is an issue….right now, the last source of available water is lookout creek, specifically 3 year around creeks that are crossed just before the 3 mile mark. Early in the year there is a small spring about ¼ mile below the lookout, but the water is not flowing this time of year. The trail is in good shape, and was recently worked on. There is only one concern, there is a swarm of attack bees at about 2 ½ miles, just after the first open brushy area, and 100 feet after some red surveyors tape on a tree. I have placed 3 bee traps, but they are probably full. Wear plenty of clothes through this area to prevent some stings, but you will get stung…don’t go if you are allergic to bees. If you are interested in helping, bring some white gas up, or some candles, and carry out trash. There is a one gallon can for gas there that is usually empty
