Trip Report
Shadow Lake - Sunrise Camp Loop — Saturday, Sep. 13, 2014

We headed out towards Sunrise a little later than expected, arriving there about 2pm. Much to our surprise, though limited, there was some parking available. We set out on the train towards Shadow Lake. About half way up, along a meadow, we were fortunate enough to encounter a grizzly bear (EDIT: NOT a grizzly, I mis-identified) and her two cubs.We continued to Shadow lake, made a trip around it, filtered some water, and then headed up to Emmons Glacier Lookout. The views were magnificent! The camp robbers were out in force, and my boys quickly learned how fearless these birds are. After unwillingly sharing some snacks from our hands, we headed back down, and cut up to Frozen Lake. At this point, it looks more like melted pond. But having dinner whilst sitting on purple rocks was fun! The trip back down to Sunrise completed our loop for the day. All it all, it was a great hike.

Bear notes....
just so other people do not get alarmed, there are not grizzlies (Ursus Arctos horribilis) in Mt. Rainier park. There are American black bears (Ursus americanus)which come in several colors, including the cinnamon color of the one you photographed.

My confusion...
That is what I thought to, but after looking at her shoulders and stubby nose, I thought that she was a griz. Is there something else I should be looking at to better identify?
