My hiking handle comes from Rachel Carson's 1962 environmental science book 'Silent Spring' and especially her fable for tomorrow that I first read in undergraduate school back in 1982 as an 18-year-old kid. Her life's work has significantly impacted me since and how I view the fragility of public lands and the big footprints we humans can leave behind. Tread lightly thrill seekers. Leave no trace.
