Vesper Peak, Headlee Pass and Vesper Lake — Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2025

North Cascades > Mountain Loop Highway

My friend and I decided to hike Vesper Peak today! We started from the trailhead at 7:10a and there were about 8 cars in the parking lot by then.

There are a few potholes on the way to the trailhead. There was only one which was bad but our BMW made it easily. Just go slow.

It was foggy in the morning when we started. We still enjoyed the typical northwest views. All the peaks literally peeking through the fog. So magical! The whole hike has mountain views! This hike has so much variety - it starts in the woods, has a few water crossings, roots on the trail, steep switchbacks, scree, lakes and a scramble. The final ascent is a scramble to the summit of Vesper Peak.

Bugs were  not too bad. We din't have to use any bug spray!

Cairns: They are your best friend. Please download your AllTrails map. The map and the cairns helped us stay on the trail. It becomes confusing at times because we couldn't see the cairns as they were camouflaged. There are a few snow patches on the final scramble but you dont need to worry about them. Just follow the cairns to reach the summit.

The trail is full of rocks and roots. Watch your foot placement. Headlee pass has a lot of dirt and scree making it very slippery. Be careful on that section. I highly recommend sturdy hiking poles for stability and a pair of good hiking shoes. The terrain is highly unforgiving!

Tons of yummy huckleberries, thimbleberries and blueberries on this hike. We couldn't stop munching on them as they are so delicious.

Tons of wildflowers blooming all over the trail. There are vibrant patches of lupine and heather before the final scramble. Do stop and admire the wonderful part of the world we live in!

From the summit, you can see Vesper Lake, Copper Lake and Spada Lake.

Please also carry ample water and sunscreen as parts of this hike are exposed. I do recommend starting this hike early.

It took us 6h 45 min for the roundtrip!
Stunning views! Highly recommend this hike!
