This was our 2nd visit to Middle Tiger this week. This time we took TMT up and Middle Tiger back. We started at the trailhead off of SE Tiger Mtn Rd. No parking allowed at the trailhead but you can park on a side street 0.2 miles away.
The walk starts with a 2.6 mile stroll along the West Side gravel Rd. The turn for TMT is well marked.
At 3.5 miles a 100 foot detour on the TMT Connector will lead you to the site of a 1925 train wreck site. There are a few wheels and other cast iron parts from the train but not much remains.
At 3.9 miles you traverse a spectacular windfall area from the Nov 2024 windstorm. I tried getting through this mess in 12/2024 and it was nearly impossible. Big thank you to the folks who cut out all of these down trees. It much have been a very labor intensive and dangerous task.
The clearcut on Middle Tiger is massive and disturbing. Views are fantastic but came at a high cost. They had left about 20 islands of standing trees but as one would expect, 90 percent of them blew down in the windstorm. See the attached Google Photo album to see satellite images of before and after the windstorm.
On the return trip we went up the Hobart-Middle Tiger Railroad 0.4mi and turned left on an unmarked bootleg trail that heads steeply down to the 15 Mile Canyon trail. This trail shows up on Gaia but not on AllTrails.
The weather inversion that we have been enjoying this week has finally broken down. On 1/19 it was in the mid 40's and sunny at the peak. Today it was a chilly 30 degrees with a breeze.
