It’s December 22. Yesterday was the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year. Plenty of folks have been enjoying winter play these days. But there’s an incoming ice storm and avalanche danger the next few days — prepare in advance and be smart if you choose to head outside. And, in non-weather news, WTA is hiring! Here’s some news you may have missed while out on trail this week.

Winter solstice: Happy belated winter solstice! Yesterday was the shortest day of the year, and from here on, our days will slowly start getting longer.

Now hiring: WTA is hiring for both full-time and seasonal positions! We are currently hiring for a training and leadership development coordinator, logistics coordinator and senior accounting manager. Additionally, we are still hiring for our seasonal 2023 trail crew leaders, assistant crew leaders and Lost Trails Found crew members

Winter adventuring: Brrr — there’s a lot of ice and snow out there (but not everywhere!). Lots of hikers are heading outside to get their fill of the chilly season. As trip reporter Zipster showed, sometimes the best decision is to find somewhere else to go when conditions are sketchy. If you’re hiking with kids or dogs, be extra sure to pack extra snacks and layers, and maybe even be ready to carry them. And keep an eye out for fun snow features

Inclement weather: As you may have heard, there’s an incoming ice storm and considerable avalanche risk this weekend, so you may plan to stay close to home. Check out our mobile app for some hiking options near you. And if you do decide to head outside, make sure to report back what you find in a trip report so others know what to expect.
