Happy new year! There are many wonderful ways to start off a new year, but enjoying the wonderland that trails provide in Washington is a favorite for many hikers. Here are a few trip reports that started 2026 on a beautiful note.

Wintery wonderland

Many hikers enjoyed the snow blanketing various parts of the state like trip reporter cristina, who enjoyed a beautiful snowshoe trip at Kendall Peak or thenomadicartist who captured spectacular photos on their overnight trip to Jolly Mountain.

Even when conditions are less than ideal, a hike can still provide just what you needed. Sagerat and her pup got outside despite low visibility and soggy trails. They enjoyed Konnowac Pass all to themselves thanks to the not-so-perfect weather.

The little things

This time of year, when the days are often damp and dark, it's helpful to slow down and appreciate the little things. JenAnnRob did just that at Squires Lake and got some stunning wildlife photos. And HikesbyJB trekked up to the “museum” at Dirty Harry’s Balcony

It can also mean heading to a nearby park or trail system with your loved ones. Cadk220 in Everett spotted a dinosaur on trail. And barefootbeachy and Netherly West Tiger enjoyed a beloved trail system near Issaquah.

Resilience and reflection

After flooding devastated many communities and trails in the state, it reminds us of the value of those spaces. Trip reports are a great place to check in on conditions of your favorite trails or new places you want to explore. AdamGI left great notes on their first day hike at Middle Fork where storms have impacted trails as did Rahmatullah31 at Lake Serene. Remember, filing trip reports like these help other hikers, but it also helps land managers know what to expect and where repair work is necessary.

Stay safe and have fun out there this season! We can’t wait to see the amazing reports you leave in 2026. It’s safe to say we’re off to a great start. Cheers to another beautiful year on trail!
